Pavia is located in Lombardy on the banks of the Ticino River, near its confluence with the Po. The city features an illustrious history, having served as the capital of the Lombard Kingdom (Ticinum) in the early Middle Ages. The city's primary landmark is the Ponte Coperto, a covered bridge over the Ticino that was faithfully rebuilt after its destruction in World War II. Pavia is home to one of the world's oldest universities, founded in 1361, where scholars like Alessandro Volta once taught. The city is noted for its medieval towers, several of which still stand in Piazza Leonardo da Vinci. Pavia Cathedral features one of the largest domes in Italy, with design contributions from Leonardo da Vinci. Just eight kilometers north lies the Certosa di Pavia, a magnificent Renaissance monastery and one of Northern Italy's most significant monuments. Pavia is also a hub for agriculture, particularly rice cultivation, as the surrounding Lomellina plain is among Europe's most productive regions.
