Busto Arsizio is located in the Lombardy region, northwest of Milan, and stands as one of the region's most prominent industrial centers. The city has a centuries-old tradition in textile manufacturing, which earned it the nickname 'Manchester of Italy' during the 19th-century industrial boom. This industrial heritage is still reflected in the urban landscape through characteristic factory buildings and grand entrepreneurial villas. A significant architectural highlight is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Piazza, a Renaissance masterpiece influenced by the designs of Bramante. The historic center also features the Basilica of San Giovanni Battista, notable for its grand Baroque facade and rich interior decorations. Throughout the 20th century, Busto Arsizio successfully transitioned into a diversified economy, greatly benefiting from its strategic proximity to Malpensa International Airport. Today, the city serves as a key commercial and educational hub within the province of Varese, balancing its industrial past with modern service sectors.
