💡 Tips

  • The valley comprises two main villages: Saint-Jean (lower) and La-Trinité (higher up, closer to the main lifts). Always double-check your destination.
  • Look out for the traditional Walser houses (Stadel) resting on mushroom-shaped stone pillars-an ingenious architectural trick to keep rodents out.
  • While it's a famous freeride mecca, never attempt to ski the off-piste Monte Rosa glaciers without hiring a local alpine guide.
  • If you plan to visit Castel Savoia (Queen Margherita's fairytale castle) in Saint-Jean, be sure to book your tickets in advance during peak seasons.

Paper-thin, crisp savory wafers filled with melting local cheese and ham. It is the excellent quick comfort food available at mountain huts.

Gressoney is divided into two main centers: Gressoney-Saint-Jean and Gressoney-La-Trinité. The valley is the heart of Walser culture, established by Germanic settlers in the 12th century. This heritage is preserved in the unique 'stadel' architecture, wooden barns balanced on mushroom-shaped stone pillars. Saint-Jean hosts the fairytale Castel Savoia, once the summer home of Queen Margherita of Savoy. For skiers, Gressoney is the central hub of the Monterosa Ski area. La-Trinité provides direct access to high-altitude runs reaching over 3,000 meters. The Punta Indren glacier is a world-renowned destination for extreme freeriding. In the summer, the valley is the primary starting point for mountaineers aiming for the 4,000-meter peaks of the Monte Rosa massif. The valley is reached via the Lys river road from Pont-Saint-Martin. Be sure to try 'chnefflene', traditional flour dumplings served with local cheese sauce. The best time for skiing is from January to March, while hikers and climbers populate the valley from July to September.
