Biella is located at the foot of the Alps in northern Piedmont and is internationally renowned as a hub for high-quality wool production. The city is divided into two distinct sections: the modern Biella Piano in the valley and the medieval Biella Piazzo on the hill, connected since 1885 by a funicular. Piazzo retains its historic character with cobbled streets and arcaded palaces like the Palazzo Cisterna. Industrial development dates back to the 13th century, fueled by the soft waters of the Cervo River, which were well-suited for textile processing, leading to the rise of major wool dynasties in the 19th century. Key religious landmarks include the Cathedral of Santo Stefano and the neighboring 9th-century Baptistery, a rare survivor of early medieval architecture. A few kilometers away lies the Sanctuary of Oropa, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most important Marian pilgrimage sites in the Alps. In 2019, Biella was designated a UNESCO Creative City for Crafts and Folk Art.
