Adige River (Italy)

Weather…

The Adige River is the second longest river in Italy after the Po, stretching approximately 410 kilometers from its source to its mouth. Originating at the Reschen Pass in the South Tyrol region of the Alps at an elevation of 1,550 meters, it flows through Lake Reschen, the Vinschgau valley, and the cities of Merano, Bolzano, Trento, and Verona before emptying into the Adriatic Sea south of Chioggia. Its drainage basin covers about 12,100 square kilometers, playing a crucial role in the hydrology of northeastern Italy. Geologically, the river's path was carved by glaciers during the Pleistocene epoch, creating the wide, U-shaped alpine valleys through which it flows. Historically, the Adige has been a vital trade artery connecting Central Europe with the Mediterranean and was the site of numerous military engagements, notably during the Napoleonic Wars. Today, the river is heavily utilized for hydroelectric power generation and supplies irrigation for the extensive apple orchards and vineyards of the region. Despite extensive canalization in its lower reaches, it remains an essential ecological corridor for various mountain and lowland species.
