Glorenza (Italy)

Weather…

Glorenza (Glurns) is a true gem in the Vinschgau Valley and, with only around 900 inhabitants, is considered the smallest town in South Tyrol. What makes Glorenza so unique is its completely preserved medieval city wall with its three gate towers, which still encircles the entire historic center today. A walk through its narrow alleys feels like a journey back to the 16th century, as the medieval townscape has been maintained almost without exception. Inside the walls, visitors find magnificent merchant houses with characteristic arcades that once sheltered the bustling trade along the Via Claudia Augusta. Key sights include the Tauferer Gate Tower, the Town Hall, and several historic fountains. Glorenza was also the birthplace of the famous illustrator Paul Flora, to whom a permanent exhibition in the town is dedicated. Its quiet atmosphere, free from mass tourism, makes it a haven for culture lovers. The surrounding landscape is defined by apple orchards and mountain peaks. A modern highlight is the PUNI Distillery, Italy's first whisky distillery, housed in an architecturally striking building. The best time to visit is spring during the apple blossom season or summer for extensive cycling tours through the Vinschgau Valley. Glorenza is best reached by bus or the Vinschger Railway from nearby Mals.
