Vipiteno

Vipiteno (Sterzing) is Italy's northernmost town, situated at an altitude of nearly 1,000 meters near the Brenner Pass. This former Fugger town was a significant mining and trading hub during the Middle Ages, a heritage still visible in its grand architecture. Vipiteno is officially recognized as one of the 'Borghi più belli d’Italia' (Italy's most beautiful villages), enchanting visitors with its distinctive Alpine charm. The undisputed landmark of the town is the 46-meter-high Zwölferturm (Tower of the Twelve), which divides the Old Town from the New Town. Built in the 15th century, it once served as a city gate and watchtower. The main street is lined with characteristic houses featuring colorful facades and bay windows that once belonged to wealthy merchants. Notable sights include the Gothic Town Hall with its ornate council chamber and the Parish Church, known for its late-Gothic altars. For active travelers, the local Rosskopf mountain, easily accessible by cable car, features one of Italy's longest sledding runs in winter and fantastic panoramic hiking trails in summer. The town is also world-famous for its yogurt, produced by the local dairy cooperative. The best time to visit is during the atmospheric Christmas market in December or in late summer for the 'Sterzing Dumpling Festival'.
