Merano (Meran in German) is a historic spa town in South Tyrol, set in a valley basin surrounded by majestic 3,000-meter peaks. Its sheltered location creates a near-Mediterranean microclimate where palm trees and cypresses flourish against an alpine backdrop. Merano rose to international fame as a health resort in the 19th century, particularly after Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sissi) stayed here for several curative visits. The ornate Kurhaus and the scenic promenades along the Passer River reflect this grand era. The Botanical Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle are widely considered among the most beautiful in the world, showcasing flora from across the globe across 12 hectares. The medieval Laubengasse (Arcades) is the town's commercial heart and one of the longest arcaded streets in Tyrol. Merano perfectly exemplifies the harmonious blend of German and Italian cultures and languages.
