Gonbad-e Qabus Tower (Iran)

Weather…

The Gonbad-e Qabus tower in Iran's Golestan province is a supreme masterpiece of Islamic engineering and holds the record as the tallest pure brick tower in the world. Built in 1006 AD by order of Qabus ibn Vushmgir, the Ziyarid ruler, it was intended as a monumental tomb for the king. Standing at a total height of 53 meters atop an artificial mound, the tower's design is mathematically precise and minimalist. It features a cylindrical body with ten star-shaped buttresses that taper into a sharp conical roof. The exterior is decorated with two bands of Kufic inscriptions documenting the builder and the date of completion. Remarkably, the tower has withstood over a thousand years of earthquakes and regional conflicts without significant structural damage, showcasing the incredible quality of medieval Persian brickwork. In 2012, UNESCO designated the Gonbad-e Qabus tower a World Heritage site for its architectural innovation and cultural significance.
