Originally built in the 9th century, the fortress was seized in 1090 and served as the administrative and spiritual heart of the Nizari Ismaili state. Its strategic location at an elevation of 2,100 meters, surrounded by sheer cliffs, rendered it nearly impregnable for centuries against numerous sieges. Far from being just a military outpost, Alamut was a significant center for learning, boasting a magnificent library that attracted leading scholars, astronomers, and philosophers of the age. The castle featured advanced engineering, including rock-cut water cisterns and a complex irrigation system for its mountain gardens. In 1256, the Mongol forces led by Hulagu Khan finally captured and systematically dismantled the fortress, ending its era of prominence. Today, the evocative ruins of Alamut offer a glimpse into the sophisticated organization and enduring legends of the medieval Hashshashin.
