Auli is a low-key spot in the Himalayas and is considered one of India's best skiing destinations. Situated at an altitude of nearly 3,000 meters, it gives panoramic views of some of the highest peaks in the world, including Nanda Devi, Kamet, and Dunagiri. The vast alpine meadows, or 'bugyals', transform into world-class ski slopes in winter and lush green trekking trails in summer. One of its main attractions is the cable car from Joshimath, which is one of the longest in Asia. Nature is pristine here, characterized by dense coniferous forests and one of the highest man-made lakes in the world, used for snowmaking. Treks to Gorson Bugyal are very popular among adventurers. The local gastronomy in the resorts has hearty Indian meals that suit the cold climate perfectly. Reaching Auli is a challenge, involving a long drive from Rishikesh to Joshimath. The best time for skiers is from January to March, while trekkers prefer the months from May to November.
