Fatehpur Sikri (India)

Weather…

Fatehpur Sikri, known as the 'City of Victory', was founded in 1571 by the Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great and served as the capital of the Mughal Empire until 1585. The city was built to honor the Sufi saint Salim Chishti, who had correctly prophesied the birth of Akbar's heir. Its architecture is a masterclass in the fusion of Hindu and Islamic styles, constructed almost entirely from spirited red sandstone. Key structures within the complex include the Buland Darwaza, the highest gateway in the world, the Jama Masjid, and the multi-storeyed Panch Mahal palace. Despite its grandeur, the city was abandoned after just 14 years due to severe water shortages and shifts in the empire's military priorities. This quick abandonment preserved the site in remarkable condition, making it one of the best-preserved Mughal urban settlements in India. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, recognized for its exceptional planning and artistic detail that reflects Akbar's pluralistic vision.
