Ranikhet
Ranikhet, the 'Queen's Meadow', is the epitome of serenity in the Kumaon Himalayas. Legend has it that a queen was so enchanted by the beauty of this place that she built her residence here. The town is known for its dense pine and oak forests and the striking views of the main Himalayan range. Unlike busier hill stations, Ranikhet has preserved its untouched charm and quiet atmosphere. Highlights include the Upat Golf Course, one of the highest in the world, and the Chaubatia Gardens with their extensive fruit orchards. The Jhula Devi Temple, known for its countless bells, is for everyone. Local gastronomy reflects Kumaoni tradition, with simple yet tasty dishes made from local grains. Reaching the town is best done via Kathgodam railway station. The good time to visit is year-round, except during the monsoon, with spring showing the orchards in full bloom.
