Nanda Devi (India)

Weather…

Nanda Devi, standing at 7,816 meters, is the second highest mountain in India and the highest located entirely within the country's borders. Situated in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, it is encircled by a formidable ring of peaks over 6,000 meters high, known as the Nanda Devi Sanctuary. Its name translates to 'Bliss-Giving Goddess', and the peak is worshipped as the patron deity of the Uttarakhand region. Due to its exceptional ecological value and extreme isolation, the area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988. In 1982, the Indian government closed the inner sanctuary to climbers and tourists to preserve the fragile high-altitude flora and fauna. The first successful summit was reached in 1936 by Bill Tilman and Noel Odell. The mountain also carries a legacy of Cold War mystery, involving a failed CIA mission to install a nuclear-powered monitoring device on the peak, which was lost during a storm and remains missing to this day.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access to the inner sanctuary of this peak is restricted for environmental protection. Visitors typically view the mountain from high-altitude trekking routes like Auli or Munsiyari.
📅
Best season
The optimal windows for clear skies and safe trekking are May to June and September to October, carefully avoiding the severe monsoon rains and extreme winter snows.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The region consists of spectacular but challenging high-Himalayan landscapes, featuring steep alpine meadows, deep gorges, and rocky trails requiring excellent fitness.
🎒
What to bring
High-quality trekking gear is mandatory, including sturdy boots, trekking poles, and comprehensive cold-weather layering. A reliable sleeping bag is essential for multi-day treks.
🅿️
Parking
Vehicles must be left in lower base towns or established ski resorts like Auli. Beyond these points, all exploration toward the mountain's vicinity is strictly on foot.
⚠️
Safety
Altitude sickness, rapidly changing weather, and treacherous trails present significant dangers. Engaging an experienced local guide is strongly recommended for any trekking.
⏱️
Time needed
Enjoying distant views from a resort might take only a few hours, but any serious trekking approach towards the outer sanctuary involves an expedition of several days to a week.
