Goðafoss (Iceland)

Weather…

Goðafoss, or the 'Waterfall of the Gods,' is one of Iceland's most impressive and historically significant natural wonders. Located in the north along the Ring Road, it is part of the Skjálfandafljót river and is famous for its semi-circular horseshoe shape. According to legend, in the year 1000, the lawspeaker Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði threw his Norse god statues into the falls after deciding that Iceland should convert to Christianity. The falls are about 12 meters high and 30 meters wide, offering great photo opportunities from multiple viewing platforms on both banks. Accessibility is excellent, making it a popular stop for those traveling between Akureyri and Lake Mývatn. During winter, the falls often freeze partially, creating dramatic ice sculptures against the dark basalt rocks. It is a 45-minute drive from Akureyri, and a nearby service station provides food and restrooms for travelers.
