Húsavík Church (Iceland)

Weather…

Húsavík Church, known as Husavikurkirkja, is an easy on the eye wooden church in northern Iceland, widely considered one of the most beautiful religious buildings in the country. It was built in 1907 according to the designs of architect Rögnvaldur Ólafsson in the Swiss Chalet style, which was highly popular in Iceland at the beginning of the 20th century. The building features a unique cruciform structure and a bustling white exterior with green trim and roofs, giving it a storybook appearance. The timber used for its construction was imported from Norway, as Iceland lacked sufficient forests for such a project. Inside, the church is adorned with colorful murals depicting biblical scenes intertwined with Icelandic landscapes. Located right by the harbor, it is a prominent fixture in the skyline of Húsavík, a town world-famous as the whale-watching capital of Iceland. The church remains a dedicated place of worship and a symbol of local heritage.
