Mursko Središće is the northernmost town in Croatia, located in Međimurje County directly on the Mura River, which marks the border with Slovenia. The town's history is inextricably linked to mining; during the 20th century, it was a vital regional center for coal extraction, a heritage that remains central to the local identity. The first written mention of the settlement dates back to 1334 under the name 'Mura-Zredistye'. Geographically, the town is characterized by the fertile floodplains of the Mura River, which today forms part of the UNESCO Mura-Drava-Danube Biosphere Reserve. The riverside promenade features space for recreation and connects the urban area with untouched nature. Following the end of mining activities in the 1970s, the town transitioned into a hub for craftsmanship and small-scale industrial production. Due to its strategic border location, Mursko Središće serves as an important transit point between Croatia and Central Europe.
