Tapolca Lake Cave (Hungary)

Weather…

The Tapolca Lake Cave is a unique underground karst system located in the heart of the town of Tapolca, near Lake Balaton. Discovered by chance in 1903 during the digging of a well, it was opened to the public in 1912, becoming the first electrically lit cave in Hungary. Its most remarkable feature is the crystal-clear karst water filling its lower passages, allowing visitors to navigate the underground lake in small boats. The water remains at a pleasant 18-20 degrees Celsius year-round, heated by rising thermal currents mixing with colder surface waters. The cave air is exceptionally pure and allergen-free, with high humidity that has been used for clinical respiratory therapy in the neighboring hospital since the 1980s. Geologically, the cave was carved out of Miocene limestone by the solvent action of flowing water. A modern visitor center opened in 2015 provides interactive exhibits on the formation of the cave system and the sensitive underground water environment.
