Sar Hill (Hungary)

Weather…

Sár Hill is a prominent, isolated volcanic mountain on the southern edge of the Mátra, directly above the town of Gyöngyös. Despite its name (Mud Hill), the mountain is a place of extraordinary botanical diversity and beauty. Geologically, it is a remnant of the volcanic activity that formed the Mátra range, but its southern exposure gives it a nearly Mediterranean microclimate. The hill is famous for its steppe vegetation and the terraced vineyards on its slopes, which produce some of the best wines of the Mátra region. A special geological highlight is the small, often temporary crater lake 'St. Anne's Lake' on the high plateau. Hiking trails lead through fragrant dry grasslands and downy oak forests.
