The Tarna is a significant river in northeastern Hungary, separating the Mátra Mountains from the Heves Plain. It originates in the Cserhát hills and flows in a wide arc to the southeast. The river plays a central role in the regional ecosystem, acting as a natural corridor between the forested mountains and the open steppe. In its upper reaches, the Tarna is a lively mountain stream flowing through easy on the eye valleys, while in its lower reaches, it meanders leisurely through fertile farmland. The Tarna is known for its rich fish fauna and well-preserved floodplain forests along its banks. Despite human interventions for regulation, the river has maintained its natural character in many sections.

The Tarna River in Heves is usually best accessed by car via the local country roads. Many small towns in the surrounding area offer straightforward and direct access points to the tranquil riverbanks.

A visit is typically most attractive in spring and summer when the bank vegetation is in full bloom. In autumn, the changing colors of the leaves on the trees also provide a very beautiful backdrop.

The riverside terrain is predominantly gentle and flat, making it highly suitable for easy hikes. The paths are mostly unpaved and frequently lead directly through green meadows or past farmland.

Light footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are generally quite sufficient for an excursion here. A pair of binoculars can be very useful for observing the diverse birdlife of the region.

There are generally no large official parking lots; cars are usually left securely in the nearest village. From the village centers, it is often only a few minutes' walk to the peaceful banks of the Tarna.

The river is mostly shallow and flows quietly, so the water current generally poses no special dangers. After heavy rainfall, however, the unpaved bank paths can become very muddy and hard to navigate.
