Eger Castle is one of Hungary's most iconic historical landmarks, gaining worldwide fame for its heroic defense against the Ottoman Empire during the Siege of 1552. Led by Captain István Dobó, a garrison of roughly 2,000 defenders managed to repel a massive Turkish army, an event that halted Ottoman expansion for decades. The fortress was originally constructed in the 13th century following the Mongol invasion and was continuously expanded into a sophisticated defense system. Today, the site houses the István Dobó Castle Museum, featuring the ruins of a Gothic cathedral, extensive underground casemates, and galleries showcasing historical weaponry. The siege was famously immortalized in Géza Gárdonyi's novel "Eclipse of the Crescent Moon," which remains a staple of Hungarian literature. Beyond its military history, the castle serves as a lively cultural center, hosting various festivals and historical reenactments that bring the medieval era to life for modern visitors.
