Sirok Castle (Hungary)

Weather…

Sirok Castle is one of Hungary's most extraordinary fortresses, as a significant portion of it was carved directly into the volcanic rhyolite tuff rock. Perched on a steep peak in the Matra Mountains, the castle once held great strategic importance overlooking the surrounding valleys. It was first mentioned in official documents in 1267 and reached its architectural zenith under the Orszagh family in the 15th and 16th centuries. Its most remarkable feature is the intricate underground system of casemates, tunnels, and rooms painstakingly chiseled into the rock beneath the inner castle. In 1596, the castle fell to the Ottomans without a struggle after the defenders fled following the fall of Eger. It was liberated in 1687 but was later partially demolished by imperial forces in 1713 to prevent its use by Hungarian rebels. Recently restored, the ruins are now a popular tourist destination. Below the castle hill stand the iconic 'Friar' and 'Nun' rock formations, which are unique geological features resulting from volcanic activity.
