Eger Minaret (Hungary)

Weather…

The Eger Minaret is the northernmost preserved structure of its kind from the Ottoman era in Europe, standing as a significant landmark of the city. Built around 1596 following the Ottoman capture of Eger Castle, it originally served as part of the Kethuda Mosque. The 40-meter-tall tower is constructed from red sandstone and features a 14-sided base, reflecting classical Ottoman architectural styles. When Turkish forces retreated in 1687, local residents attempted to pull down the minaret using 40 oxen, but the tower's robust construction prevented its collapse. Instead of being destroyed, it was capped with a Christian cross to symbolize the transition of power. Today, the minaret functions as a popular observation tower, accessible via a narrow spiral staircase with 97 steps. It is one of only three remaining minarets in Hungary, offering a unique historical perspective and panoramic views of the city's baroque rooftops and the surrounding landscape.
