Tiszadob Andrássy Castle
The Andrássy Palace in Tiszadob is a prime example of Hungarian historicist architecture, built between 1880 and 1885 for Count Gyula Andrássy. The building is renowned for its 'calendar' symbolism: it features 4 towers for the seasons, 12 entrances for the months, 52 rooms for the weeks, and 365 windows for the days of the year. Architect Arthur Meinig drew inspiration from the French Renaissance chateaux of the Loire Valley, blending them with Neogothic elements to create a romantic, knightly appearance. One of the estate's most striking features is the manicured maze of boxwood and yew in the garden, which resembles a giant embroidery when viewed from above. The interior spaces, notably the ornate oak staircase and the Knight's Hall, reflect the opulence of 19th-century aristocratic life. Located near a scenic oxbow lake of the Tisza River, the recently renovated palace serves as a museum and a major cultural landmark in Eastern Hungary.
