The Kimbia Agricultural Centre is located on the banks of the Berbice River and is historically associated with the Guyana National Service (GNS). Established in the 1970s, the centre originally served as a training ground for youth and a pioneer project for large-scale cultivation of legumes and grains in the intermediate savannahs. Kimbia was a central part of the government's strategy to achieve food self-sufficiency and open up the country's hinterland. The soils in this region required specific agricultural techniques and research to boost the productivity of corn and soybeans.
