The original chapel was founded in 1824 by the missionary John Wray, who was a prominent advocate for the education and religious instruction of enslaved people. The current building was completed in 1841, replacing the earlier structure to accommodate the growing congregation following full emancipation in 1838. Architecturally, the church represents the modest yet dignified 19th-century Congregationalist style, characterized by its sturdy wooden construction. During the colonial era, it served as both a house of worship and a vital educational center where literacy was taught to those previously denied it. In 2004, the chapel was designated a national monument in recognition of its social and cultural contributions. Today, the site stands as a testament to the struggle for freedom and the cultural heritage of the African diaspora in Guyana.
