Fort of Cacheu (Guinea-Bissau)

Weather…

The Fort of Cacheu is one of the oldest European structures in sub-Saharan Africa, marking the early stages of Portuguese maritime expansion. Established in 1588 along the banks of the Cacheu River, the fort was primarily built to secure the region's lucrative trade in slaves and ivory and to repel rival European merchants. This compact, quadrilateral fortress features corner bastions and thick defensive walls that have undergone numerous renovations over the centuries. As Cacheu was the first administrative capital of Portuguese Guinea, the fort served as the cornerstone of colonial authority in the region. Today, the courtyard houses a significant collection of bronze statues depicting Portuguese explorers and colonial figures, such as Diogo Cão and Teixeira Pinto, which were relocated here from Bissau after independence. The site has been transformed into a memorial complex that confronts the dark legacy of the transatlantic slave trade. Together with the nearby Memorial Museum of Slavery, the fort stands as a crucial educational landmark, preserving the complex and often painful history of West African colonial encounters.
