Canchungo Historic Site

The historic site of Canchungo, formerly known as Teixeira Pinto, is a central location for the history of the Manjaco people and the colonial 'pacification campaigns' of the early 20th century. As the former administrative capital of the Cacheu district, the town served as a primary base for enforcing Portuguese authority in the region. The historic core features numerous colonial-era buildings characterized by broad verandas and thick masonry, reflecting the architectural style of the period. Canchungo was also an important economic center for the production and export of palm oil and peanuts, which brought significant infrastructure development to the area. A notable aspect of its history is the fierce resistance of the Manjaco warriors, whose defiance shaped the local identity. The renaming of the town from Teixeira Pinto to Canchungo after independence in 1974 was a powerful symbolic act of reclaiming national sovereignty.
