Biombo is the administrative center of the eponymous sector in western Guinea-Bissau and a heartland for the Pepel people. The town is situated within a dynamic coastal zone defined by a dense network of tidal channels and mangrove forests. Biombo functions as a significant fishing port, serving as a base for pirogues heading to the nutrient-rich waters of the Atlantic and the nearby Bijagós Archipelago. The town's economic foundation is further supported by cashew nut exports and the production of palm wine, which is reputed to be of exceptionally high quality in this region. Biombo holds considerable historical and cultural importance, as it was a key site of fierce Pepel resistance against the Portuguese colonial administration. The town's architecture still displays traces of the colonial era in the form of decaying administrative buildings, which contrast sharply with the animated traditional residential districts. The settlement is renowned for its deeply ingrained animist traditions, which manifest in various sacred sites and ritual ceremonies. Biombo serves as an indispensable hub for the maritime and agricultural logistics of western Guinea-Bissau.
