The Vikos Gorge, set in the Pindus Mountains of northwestern Greece, is listed by the Guinness World Records as the deepest gorge in the world relative to its width. It stretches for about 20 kilometers and reaches depths of over 900 meters at several locations. The gorge is the core of the Vikos-Aoos National Park, established in 1973 to safeguard the region's exceptional biodiversity. The Voidomatis River flows along its floor and is celebrated as one of the cleanest and coldest rivers in Europe. Geologically, the gorge consists of massive limestone and dolomite formations carved by erosion over millions of years. This protected area provides a habitat for rare species such as brown bears, wolves, and golden eagles, as well as over 1,700 plant species. Numerous hiking trails traverse the dramatic landscape, often linking the traditional stone villages of the Zagori region.
