Pindus Mountain Range (Greece)

Weather…

The Pindus mountain range, often called the "spine of Greece," is the country's largest mountain chain, extending about 160 kilometers from the Albanian border to the Gulf of Corinth. The highest peak is Mount Smolikas at 2,637 meters, making it the second highest in Greece after Mount Olympus. The range is characterized by dramatic limestone formations, deep canyons like the world-record Vikos Gorge, and vast high-altitude plateaus. It serves as a major climatic divide, trapping moisture from the Ionian Sea on its western slopes while leaving the eastern plains much drier. The dense forests of the Pindus are one of the few remaining habitats in Europe for brown bears, wolves, and Balkan lynx. Two national parks, Vikos-Aoos and Pindus (Valia Calda), provide protection for its extraordinary biodiversity. The region is also famous for the historic stone villages of Zagori and the impressive arched stone bridges built by master masons over centuries.
