Lake Pamvotis, also known as the Lake of Ioannina, is located in northwestern Greece at the foot of Mount Mitsikeli in the region of Epirus. Covering an area of approximately 19 square kilometers with an average depth of only 4 to 5 meters, it is a shallow but ecologically sensitive body of water. A unique feature of the lake is the inhabited Ioannina Island, which lacks its own specific name and is famous for its Byzantine monasteries and the residence of Ali Pasha. The lake plays a central role in the local climate and hosts a wide variety of waterfowl, amphibians, and endemic fish species. In recent decades, the lake has faced challenges such as eutrophication and pollution, prompting extensive conservation efforts. Historically, the lake served as a strategic point for various civilizations, from the Byzantines to the Ottomans. The lakeside promenade of Ioannina features spectacular views of the mirror-like water and the surrounding mountain peaks. The historical lake is instantly and perfectly accessible directly from the lively waterfront of Ioannina city. Small traditional ferries regularly depart from the main promenade directly to the inhabited island.

Pleasant spring and cool autumn gracefully provide the absolute most comfortable weather for walking along the shore and taking relaxing boat trips. Early gentle mornings often feature a highly photogenic mist.

The immediate solid shores basically feature extremely flat, wide paved promenades and very well-kept central pedestrian areas, providing genuinely effortless walking conditions. The island also has paved alleys.

What to bring
Standard basic casual everyday clothing and perfectly comfortable walking shoes are completely adequate for the city lake. If taking the small ferry to the island during the evening, a light windbreaker is smart.

Visitors can safely and generally easily use designated public parking lots or reliable street parking available within the busy center of Ioannina, mostly within a short walking distance from the lakeside docks.

The highly urbanized lakeside environment is genuinely very secure and well-lit. When taking the small historic ferries to the famous island, simply follow the standard safety instructions from the boat operators.

Exploring the long lively lakeside promenade simply takes a solid hour or two, but adding a ferry trip to the island and exploring its old monasteries extends the visit to a very fulfilling half-day excursion.
