Lake Pamvotis (Greece)

Weather…

Lake Pamvotis, also known as the Lake of Ioannina, is located in northwestern Greece at the foot of Mount Mitsikeli in the region of Epirus. Covering an area of approximately 19 square kilometers with an average depth of only 4 to 5 meters, it is a shallow but ecologically sensitive body of water. A unique feature of the lake is the inhabited Ioannina Island, which lacks its own specific name and is famous for its Byzantine monasteries and the residence of Ali Pasha. The lake plays a central role in the local climate and hosts a wide variety of waterfowl, amphibians, and endemic fish species. In recent decades, the lake has faced challenges such as eutrophication and pollution, prompting extensive conservation efforts. Historically, the lake served as a strategic point for various civilizations, from the Byzantines to the Ottomans. The lakeside promenade of Ioannina features spectacular views of the mirror-like water and the surrounding mountain peaks. Lake Pamvotis is not only a natural monument but also the cultural heart of the region.
