Castle of Nafpaktos (Greece)

Weather…

The Castle of Nafpaktos is one of the most impressive and well-preserved medieval fortifications in Greece, overlooking the strategic entrance to the Gulf of Corinth. Built upon ancient foundations, the current structure was significantly developed by the Byzantines and later by the Venetians in the 15th century. Its most remarkable feature is the five-tiered fortification system that ascends from the harbor to the hilltop citadel, dividing the city into defensive zones. In 1571, the nearby waters hosted the famous Battle of Lepanto, where the Holy League defeated the Ottoman fleet. The fortress walls fully enclose the historic center and terminate at the sea with two bastions guarding the entrance to the small circular port. Within the enclosures, remains from various eras can be seen, including Byzantine churches and Ottoman structures, reflecting the city's diverse and tumultuous history as a major maritime hub.
