  • The east coast is calmer, greener, and great for relaxed driving and family tavernas.
  • Windsurfing is world-class in Vasiliki in the south; expect strong afternoon thermal winds there.
  • Rent a small boat in Nydri to explore the nearby islets like Meganisi independently.

Lefkada, the capital of the Ionian island of the same name, is characterized by a unique architectural style shaped by the devastating earthquakes of 1948 and 1953. As traditional stone buildings could not withstand the tremors, residents developed a specialized anti-seismic system where the upper floors were constructed using lightweight wood and colored corrugated iron sheets. These distinctive, brightly painted facades now give the town a visual identity that differs significantly from other Greek island settlements. The town is connected to the Greek mainland by a 50-meter-long swing bridge, making it a vital geographical link in the region. Historically, Lefkada was under Venetian, French, and British rule before joining modern Greece in 1864. The historic center hosts numerous Baroque-style churches, such as the 17th-century Church of Agios Spyridon, reflecting its diverse cultural heritage. Today, the town's marina is one of the most modern in Greece, serving as a primary hub for sailing tourism across the Ionian Sea.
