Organised since 1955, the summer Festival of Speech and Art offers theatre, music, literature and cultural events in the island's capital throughout August.
Lefkada, the capital of the Ionian island of the same name, is characterized by a unique architectural style shaped by the devastating earthquakes of 1948 and 1953. As traditional stone buildings could not withstand the tremors, residents developed a specialized anti-seismic system where the upper floors were constructed using lightweight wood and colored corrugated iron sheets. These distinctive, brightly painted facades now give the town a visual identity that differs significantly from other Greek island settlements. The town is connected to the Greek mainland by a 50-meter-long swing bridge, making it a vital geographical link in the region. Historically, Lefkada was under Venetian, French, and British rule before joining modern Greece in 1864. The historic center hosts numerous Baroque-style churches, such as the 17th-century Church of Agios Spyridon, reflecting its diverse cultural heritage. Today, the town's marina is one of the most modern in Greece, serving as a primary hub for sailing tourism across the Ionian Sea.
