Atalanti is a significant town in the Phthiotis region of Central Greece, acting as the administrative seat of the Lokroi municipality. Situated at the foothills of Mount Chlomos, the town overlooks the fertile Atalanti plain and the nearby gulf of the same name. It is built near the site of ancient Opus, the capital of the East Locrians, which was mentioned by Homer in the Iliad. The area has a long-standing agricultural tradition, specializing in the production of tobacco, cotton, olives, and premium wines that are exported internationally. A defining event in its modern history was the massive earthquake of 1894, which significantly altered the local geography and led to the creation of the Atalanti Island. Today, the town is a bustling local hub with a rich cultural life, featuring an Archaeological Museum that houses finds from the prehistoric to the Roman period.
