Aigio, also spelled Aegion, is the second-largest city in the Achaea regional unit, beautifully situated on the southern shores of the Gulf of Corinth. With roots tracing back to the Mycenaean era, the city gained prominence in antiquity as the administrative and religious capital of the Achaean League. The city's geography is distinctively organized into three levels: the seaside district with the port, the middle level comprising the commercial center, and the upper level featuring the historic neighborhoods. A key landmark is the Panagia Tripiti church, an architectural marvel built into a seaside cliff cave, serving as a major pilgrimage site. The surrounding plains are highly productive, famous for citrus orchards and the cultivation of the premium 'Vostizza' black currants, a major Greek export. In 1995, Aigio was struck by a powerful earthquake, which prompted extensive reconstruction and the adoption of modern urban planning. Positioned between the Corinthian Gulf and the Panachaiko mountains, Aigio serves as a scenic gateway for both maritime and terrestrial travel. Recent improvements in transport infrastructure, including the new railway line and highway, have reinforced its status as a vital economic hub in the northern Peloponnese.
