Mycenae (Greece)

Weather…

Mycenae was the political and cultural center of the Mycenaean civilization that dominated late Bronze Age Greece. Closely linked to Homer's epics, the archaeological site impresses with the monumental Lion Gate, the primary entrance to the citadel. The massive fortifications were later called 'Cyclopean' because succeeding generations believed only the one-eyed giants could have moved such multi-ton stones. Inside the fortress, Heinrich Schliemann discovered the famous shaft graves and golden death masks, including the one attributed to Agamemnon. An architectural wonder located outside the walls is the Treasury of Atreus, a monumental beehive tomb (tholos) with a perfectly preserved ceiling. Its hilltop position features expansive views over the Plain of Argos to the sea. The modern on-site museum provides deep insights into this warrior-like yet highly sophisticated culture. The best time to visit is in the morning or late spring when the landscape is still green. Mycenae is a must-see for history buffs and is easily accessible from Nafplio.
