Delphi
Delphi, perched on the dramatic slopes of Mount Parnassus, was considered the 'Omphalos' (navel of the world) by the ancient Greeks. It was the site of the famous Oracle of Pythia, where leaders and commoners alike sought the divine guidance of Apollo. The archaeological site spans several terraces, offering striking views over the Pleistos valley and the vast olive groves leading to the sea. Walking up the Sacred Way, visitors pass the treasuries of ancient city-states to reach the great Temple of Apollo. Key highlights include the ancient theater with its incredible acoustics and the high-altitude stadium where the Pythian Games were held. Slightly separate from the main site is the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia, featuring the Tholos, a circular marble building that is one of the most iconic images of Greece. The Castalia Spring, where pilgrims once performed ritual purifications, still flows near the roadside. The rugged mountain scenery combined with the ancient marble ruins creates a truly mystical atmosphere. The Delphi Archaeological Museum houses world-renowned treasures, including the bronze Charioteer of Delphi and the Sphinx of Naxos. The modern town of Delphi is just a short walk from the ruins, offering hotels and tavernas with panoramic views of the Corinthian Gulf. Visiting Delphi is not just an archaeological tour; it is a journey into the spiritual heart of the ancient world. It is best to arrive early to avoid the crowds and the midday sun, especially during the summer months.
