Battle of Tyrnavos (Greece)

Weather…

The Battle of Tyrnavos was a significant military engagement during the Greco-Turkish War of 1897, often referred to as the 'Thirty Days' War'. On April 23, 1897, Greek troops led by Crown Prince Constantine faced the numerically superior Ottoman army under Edhem Pasha. The region around Tyrnavos in Thessaly became the scene of intense fighting as Ottoman forces attempted to break through Greek defensive lines to advance further south. Despite fierce resistance from Greek soldiers, strategic shortcomings and the massive artillery superiority of the Ottomans eventually led to a Greek retreat toward Larissa. This defeat marked a turning point in the brief conflict and forced the Greek government to seek international mediation to prevent a total collapse of the front. The battle highlighted the technological and organizational superiority of the Ottoman army at the time, which had been modernized by German military advisors. Today, the battle is remembered as part of the difficult diplomatic and military challenges Greece faced while consolidating its borders in the late 19th century.
