Thessalian Plain (Greece)

Weather…

The Thessalian Plain is the largest low-lying region in Greece and is often called the "breadbasket" of the country. Covering an area of approximately 5,000 square kilometers, the plain is almost entirely encircled by mountain ranges, including Olympus, Pindus, Ossa, and Pelion. The Pineios River serves as the primary drainage system for the region, carving its way through the Vale of Tempe to reach the Aegean Sea. In ancient times, Thessaly was renowned for its fertile land, horse breeding, and superior cavalry, which was considered the best in Greece. Geologically, the plain originated as a massive inland lake that eventually drained due to tectonic shifts, leaving behind rich alluvial deposits well-suited for farming. Today, it is Greece's agricultural heartland, producing significant yields of cotton, wheat, tobacco, and sugar beets. On its northwestern edge rise the world-famous rock formations of Meteora, which host Byzantine monasteries perched on their summits.
