Established in 1992, this non-profit environmental organization is dedicated to the protection and rehabilitation of bears rescued from captivity or illegal ownership. The sanctuary occupies about 50 hectares of enclosed natural forest at an altitude of 1,350 meters, providing the residents with a semi-wild environment. Arcturos was originally founded to eliminate the 'dancing bear' practice in Greece and the broader Balkan region, a goal it has since achieved. Today, it serves as a lifelong home for bears that cannot be reintroduced to the wild and runs specialized rehabilitation programs for orphaned cubs. Beyond bears, Arcturos operates a wolf sanctuary in nearby Agrapidya and promotes the breeding of Greek Shepherd dogs to help farmers protect livestock from predators.
