Vouraikos Gorge (Greece)

Weather…

The Vouraikos Gorge is located in the Peloponnese, in the region of Achaea, and is one of Greece's most spectacular natural monuments. Over millennia, the Vouraikos River has carved a deep canyon through the limestone between the Chelmos and Erymanthos mountains. The gorge is globally renowned for the Diakofto-Kalavryta Rack Railway, known as 'Odontotos,' which has been in operation since 1896. The railway line traverses dizzying bridges, narrow tunnels, and passes by massive waterfalls directly along the rock faces. The gorge is part of the Chelmos-Vouraikos Geopark, which belongs to the UNESCO Global Geoparks network due to its unique geology and biodiversity. Numerous caves are scattered along the route, including the famous 'Cave of the Lakes.' Hiking through the gorge along the railway tracks is considered one of the finest hiking experiences in Greece, showcasing untouched nature and historic engineering.
