Pyrgos is the welcoming commercial and administrative center of the Elis prefecture in the western part of the Peloponnese peninsula. Surrounded by fertile plains, the town owes its historical wealth to the trade of currants. The architecture of Pyrgos is characterized by neoclassical buildings and the central square, where locals gather in traditional cafes. The city is an excellent starting point for visiting the nearby ancient site of Olympia. Just a few kilometers from the city center, a spectacular coastline opens up to the Ionian Sea. Skafidia Beach and Paralia Leventochoriou offer endlessly long stretches of sand, excellent for long walks and water sports. Paralia Agiou Ilia and Agios Andreas impress with clean, gently sloping waters, while locations like Matzakoura, PHEIA, and the Vriniotis Resorts provide excellent relaxation away from the hustle and bustle. The region around Pyrgos is heavily agricultural, which is reflected in the local cuisine through excellent olive oil, fresh vegetables, and fine wines. Along the beaches, visitors will also find scenic tavernas serving fresh fish alongside wide-open sunsets over the sea.
