Svaneti Towers in Mestia
The Svaneti Towers in Mestia are the architectural hallmark of the Upper Svaneti region and have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1996. These unique defensive dwellings, locally known as 'koshki,' were primarily constructed between the 9th and 13th centuries by Svan families. The towers served multiple purposes: they were residential spaces, defensive strongholds against invaders, and safe shelters from avalanches or during blood feuds. A typical tower stands about 20 to 25 meters tall and consists of four to five floors, with the uppermost level featuring crenellations for defense. Built from heavy stone and lime mortar, these structures have remarkably survived centuries of harsh Caucasian winters and seismic activity. Mestia serves as the cultural heart of the region, boasting the highest density of well-preserved towers. Many of these structures are now part of private museums or guesthouses, allowing visitors to climb the narrow interior wooden ladders and explore their historic interiors. The towers symbolize the indomitable spirit of the Svan people and their extraordinary adaptation to the high-altitude environment. Set against the backdrop of majestic peaks like Mount Ushba, they create one of the most iconic skylines in the entire Caucasus mountain range.
