Senaki is a town of about 22,000 inhabitants in the Samegrelo region of western Georgia, around 40 kilometres from the Black Sea coast on the Tekhuri River. The area has been settled since the Bronze Age; in Soviet times, between 1933 and 1989, the town was named Mikha Tskhakaya in honour of a Bolshevik activist born here. Senaki hosts one of the most important military bases of the Georgian armed forces, severely damaged during the 2008 war and subsequently modernised to NATO standards. Its economy is based on food processing, tea and tobacco cultivation and the production of traditional Mingrelian specialities. Culturally, the town centre is dominated by a late 19th-century neoclassical theatre, alongside a local history museum and several 19th-century churches. A few kilometres away lies the medieval Nokalakevi monastery complex, which also preserves the ruins of the ancient fortress of Archaeopolis, one of the most important archaeological sites in western Georgia, along with the Tekhuri River gorges, with their subtropical forests and waterfalls.
