Martvili Canyon
Martvili Canyon, located in the Samegrelo region, is a memorable natural wonder carved by the Abasha River over millennia. The canyon stretches for 2.4 kilometers, with depths ranging from 20 to 40 meters, and is famous for its emerald-green waters, steep limestone cliffs, and cascading waterfalls. Historically, this site was used as a summer residence and private swimming area by the Dadiani noble family, whose historical stone steps can still be seen carved into the rocks. In 2010, the canyon gained international scientific significance when fossils of dinosaurs and other prehistoric reptiles were discovered in its geological layers. Visitors can explore the upper section of the canyon by boat, paddling through narrow passages to see spectacular falls up close. The lower section features well-maintained walking paths and observation decks that provide panoramic views of the entire gorge and its lush, subtropical vegetation. The high humidity and shade have fostered a unique ecosystem of moss-covered trees and ferns, creating a mystical atmosphere. Following a major renovation in 2016, the site has become one of Western Georgia's premier eco-tourism destinations, balancing visitor access with the preservation of its unique geological and paleontological heritage.
