Anaklia sits near the border of the Abkhazia region and was developed as a futuristic resort city on the Black Sea coast. The town is visually defined by its long timber boardwalks and the impressive Anaklia-Ganmukhuri Pedestrian Bridge, one of the longest timber bridges in Europe, stretching over the Enguri River. It has gained international recognition for hosting major electronic music festivals, bringing lively energy to its normally laid-back sandy shores. The environment around Anaklia is flat and marshy, with wide sandy beaches that offer magnificent, unobstructed sunsets over the Black Sea. The nearby Kolkheti National Park provides a stark contrast with its wild wetlands and excellent opportunities for birdwatching. Gastronomically, visitors can indulge in the spicy, rich flavors of the Samegrelo region, such as Elarji (cornmeal with copious amounts of cheese) and the famously fiery Megrelian Ajika. Traveling to Anaklia is usually done via the nearby city of Zugdidi. From Zugdidi, regular marshrutkas and taxis take about 30 to 40 minutes to reach the coast. The best time to experience Anaklia is during the hot summer months, especially in July and August, when the sea is first-rate for swimming and the town's beach clubs and festival grounds are alive with activity.
