Prometheus Cave (Georgia)

Weather…

The Prometheus Cave, located near the town of Tskaltubo in the Imereti region, is Georgia's largest cave system open to tourists and a significant natural monument. Discovered by a speleological expedition in 1984, the cave underwent extensive development before officially opening to the public in 2011, named after the Greek mythological figure who was purportedly chained to the nearby Khvamli Mountain. The entire cave system stretches for approximately 11 kilometers, though the standard tourist trail covers a manageable 1.4-kilometer section through six magnificent halls, including the Argonauts, Kolkheti, and Medea halls. Visitors can witness an extraordinary array of stalactites, stalagmites, petrified waterfalls, and cave curtains, all artistically illuminated by a modern multi-colored lighting system. A highlight of the visit is the optional underground boat ride along the subterranean Kumi River, which leads visitors to the cave's exit. The cave maintains a constant internal temperature of 14 degrees Celsius throughout the year, making it a comfortable destination in any season. This karst masterpiece provides a unique window into millions of years of geological history and serves as a vital habitat for several endemic species of bats and invertebrates.

📋 Practical info

🚪
Visiting
This spectacular stalactite cave in Georgia can strictly only be explored safely on the inside as part of well-organized, officially guided tours. Along the beautifully illuminated, paved paths, you will pass massive stalactites, highly impressive stalagmites, and underground rivers.
🕒
Typical hours
The cave is generally open to visitors during the day all year round, but typically closes on certain days of the week, very often on Mondays, for essential maintenance. The exact times and tour schedules vary slightly depending on the season, so checking in advance is highly advisable.
📷
Photography
The colorful and artistic lighting inside the cave sets the bizarre rock formations in a particularly impressive scene for dedicated photographers. Since tripods are often not permitted during the guided tours, a fast lens is highly recommended for taking sharp pictures without a flash.
⏱️
Time needed
The standard guided tour through the fascinating underground halls usually takes roughly about an hour and has a very comprehensive insight. If you additionally opt for the highly popular boat ride on the underground lake, you should plan for a total of at least one and a half hours.
Combine with
The cave can be perfectly combined with a day trip to the nearby Sataplia Cave, where you can also clearly see remarkably well-preserved dinosaur footprints. The highly easy on the eye Okatse Canyon, with its panoramic suspension bridges, is also a fantastic destination in the immediate region.
🧭
Getting there
The modern visitor center is most easily reached from Kutaisi by hiring a taxi, renting a car, or through very well-organized group tours. The main roads leading directly to the cave are well developed and there is a large, clearly designated parking lot right in front of the entrance building.
💡
Insider tip
Be absolutely sure to bring a light jacket or a warm sweater, as the internal temperature of the cave remains at a constant, rather cool 14 degrees Celsius all year round. Also, wear sturdy, non-slip footwear, as the paved paths can be quite wet and very slippery in some specific places.
