Kolkheti National Park (Georgia)

Weather…

Kolkheti National Park is located on the Georgian Black Sea coast in the west of the country and encompasses the wetlands around Lake Paliastomi and the mouth of the Rioni River. Established in 1999, the protected area covers approximately 28,940 hectares and preserves the last remains of the once vast Colchic swamplands. The area is of global ecological importance and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2021. It serves as one of the most important stopovers for migratory birds on the African-Eurasian route, with over 190 bird species observed annually. The vegetation is characterized by dense alder swamp forests, peat bogs, and floating vegetation mats typical of the Colchis region. Historically, the area is closely linked to the ancient Greek mythology of the Argonauts, who are said to have searched for the Golden Fleece here. Today, the park gives opportunities for boat excursions on the lake and through the branched canals to experience the rare flora and fauna up close.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The park is typically accessed from the nearby city of Poti, which serves as a major base. Visitors usually rely on local boats or guided tours to navigate the extensive waterways and marshlands characteristic of the area.
📅
Best season
Spring and autumn are widely regarded as the best seasons to visit, offering good conditions for birdwatching during migration. Summers can be quite humid, while winter months may present cooler, damper weather conditions.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape consists predominantly of flat, wetland ecosystems, including peat bogs, swamp forests, and coastal lakes. Solid ground is limited, meaning exploration is primarily conducted via water channels.
🎒
What to bring
Essential items include waterproof footwear, insect repellent to combat wetland bugs, and high-quality binoculars for wildlife viewing. Light, breathable clothing is recommended, along with a windbreaker for boat rides.
🅿️
Parking
Secure parking is generally found at the park's main visitor center or at designated boat launch points near Poti. It is always wise to leave your vehicle in officially monitored areas when embarking on a boat tour.
⚠️
Safety
Navigating the marshes can be disorienting, so going with a local guide is highly recommended to ensure a safe return. Visitors must also be cautious around the water edges and use life jackets during all boat excursions.
⏱️
Time needed
Most visitors opt for a guided boat tour lasting between two to four hours to properly experience the wetland flora and fauna. Enthusiastic birdwatchers may dedicate an entire day to fully appreciate the diverse species.
