Samtredia is a town of about 25,000 inhabitants in the Imereti region of western Georgia, picturesquely set in the lowland at the lower course of the Rioni and its tributary the Tskhenistskali. Its position in the middle of the Colchian plain gives it a warm, subtropical climate that is well suited to tea, maize, hazelnuts, walnuts and wine. The town owes its rise to the railway: in 1872 it was connected to the Transcaucasian line linking Tbilisi and Poti, and later it became a major junction from which lines branch off towards Tbilisi, Batumi, Zugdidi and Kutaisi. Samtredia received official town status in 1921. Its streetscape is dominated by one- and two-storey wooden houses with wraparound verandas alongside Soviet administrative buildings. Worthwhile sights include the Church of Saint Nicholas, the late-Stalinist railway station, the local history museum and the busy weekly market selling regional produce. In the surrounding Rioni plain, attractions include the medieval Modinakhe fortress and the deep gorges of the Tskhenistskali River.
